Electrician - Department of Transportation

Position Type: Full-time, Hourly

Department: Department of Transportation - 10190 W Watertown Plank Rd

Compensation Range: $32.14
Closing Date: Open until filled

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Electrical Mechanic Supervisor, install, maintain and repair electrical systems on the Interstate, State Truck, and Milwaukee County Highway Systems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain and repair electrical power, transmission, lighting, communication signal, alarm systems, traffic signals, instruments, apparatus and other equipment.
  • Terminate and complete splices on high voltage cable.
  • Troubleshoot circuit problems.
  • Install motors, motor starting switches and remote equipment.
  • Troubleshoot motor controls and automatic sequence controls; work from blueprints, sketches specifications and diagrams to requisition supplies and materials.
  • Use tools of the electrical trade for component construction; to follow local and national codes and safety requirements.
  • Operate CDL rated power lift boom trucks while working at extreme heights and in confined spaces.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five years of work as a journeyman electrician.
  • Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship by the Wisconsin.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
  • Class B CDL with no airbrake restriction must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • Electrician license

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to push, pull, lift and carry up to 60lbs. 
  • Ability to work inside and outside in variable temperatures.
  • Ability to work independently, ability to work at heights
  • Problem solving ability.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to frequently stand and walk.

Special Instructions: This Original examination is open to Wisconsin residents.  In accordance with Rule III Section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
