Heating and Ventilating Mechanic 1

Position Type: Full time, hourly

Department: General Mitchell International Airport

Compensation Range: $21.09 - $24.48 ($43,875.59 - $50,932.73)
Closing Date: Continuous - Open until all positions are filled

*All Heating and Ventilating Mechanic I’s can be assigned to any shift or assigned overtime as needed to cover weekends, holidays or open shifts.*

Job Summary: The Heating and Ventilating Mechanic 1 ensures the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Central Plant, which includes boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air compressors and associated equipment. Operates and maintains all HVAC System components and General Mitchell International and Timmerman Airports. This includes but is not limited to Air Handling Units, Rooftop Units, and Exhaust Systems. Also, maintain DX cooling for IT and Electrical equipment rooms. These are needed for the protection of infrastructure and critical systems. These requirements are with the end goal of ensuring safe and comfortable conditions for the traveling public, airline and airport employees.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide 24/7 – 365 coverage of Central Plant Operations. This includes but not limited to start up, shut down, operation and maintenance of four (4) 485 ton Chillers, three (3) 15,960 MBH (476 BoHP) natural gas/oil boilers, cooling towers and air compressors. This includes operation of the Metasys and Systecon Central Plant Control System;

  • Monitor, adjust and respond to alarms from two Building Automation Systems (Johnson Controls’ Metasys and Kain Energy’s Schneider Electric System), as necessary to maintain comfort and safety of the Main Terminal and Remote Buildings Systems not on a BAS must be physically visited periodically to ensure proper operation;

  • Respond to calls from Airport Operations or Tenants in all matters related to maintenance of facilities. This includes the Main Terminal, Combined Maintenance Facility, Fire Station, Parking Structure and the Amtrak Station. Make a determination on a course of action. Temporarily isolate/shutdown or contact Supervisor to call in Building Trades;

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC Equipment. This includes but is not limited to Air Handling Units, Rooftop and Makeup Air Units, Exhaust Systems and Split System DX Units for cooling Electrical and IT Rooms. Maintenance required includes filter and belt replacement, greasing bearings, sheave alignment and replace any that are damaged;

  • Use the CMMS (CityWorks) to see new work orders and track progress throughout jobs lifecycle. Also used to develop Preventive Maintenance Schedule. After completion of work, track labor hours in CMMS;

  • Maintain material and parts inventory for commonly used parts and materials. This would include but not limited to, filters, belts, oil and grease. Commonly used parts would include room Pneumatic, DDC and Line Voltage Thermostats, Thermostat Covers, Valve and Damper Actuators;

  • Periodically visit remote locations not on a BAS. This is especially import for buildings that are unoccupied and all areas during extreme outside air temperatures;

  • Serve as escort for contractors that are not badged at the Airport. Ensure they comply with all Airport rules both in security matters as well as compliance with all local building and Fire Codes. Ensure contractors perform work to our standards clean up after work is complete;

  • Maintain cleanliness of the Central Plant and all mechanical rooms;

  • Assist Building Trades as required when working on HVAC Equipment. Assist Plumbers and Fitters any time it is needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;

  • Three to five years Mechanical Maintenance Experience, preferably with Central Plant and HVAC;

  • The ability to lift/carry up to 60 pounds and push/pull up to 80 pounds on a regular basis

License Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required at time of application and maintained throughout employment.

  • Class 2 Airport License will need to be obtained within the first 10 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NIULPE or ASOPE license

  • Low pressure license with 2nd Class Engineer’s License

  • Associates Degree in HVAC, HVAC Certification or Specialized training in HVAC, Central Plant Operations or controls may be substituted for 2 years of experience

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets;

  • Intermediate knowledge of Building Automation Systems and associated Digital controllers and PLC’s;

  • Advanced knowledge of boilers and hot water systems and their digital controls;

  • Advanced knowledge of Chillers, Chill water systems, Cooling tower system and their digital controls;

  • Ability to work alone often;

  • Must be able to handle situations that arise throughout the Airport, while maintaining safe operation of the Central Plant
