Mechanic

Position Type: Full time - Hourly

Department: General Mitchell International Airport

Compensation Range: $21.91 - $25.29 ($45,574.53 - $52,608.53)
Closing Date: Position is open until filled

 Job Summary: Responsible for the diagnostic, repair, setup, dismantling and upkeep of all county owned vehicles and equipment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment;

  • Use hand and power tools, lifts, hoists, welders, torches and diagnostic test equipment to perform the repairs;

  • Set up new vehicles and equipment prior to being placed in service;

  • Install beacons, work lights, communication equipment, temperature sensors and strobe lights;

  • Thorough inspection of all factory and dealer installed equipment;

  • Participate in training classes and seminars that may be provided by GMIA to upgrade existing skills or teach new skills;

  • Order equipment;

  • Complete paperwork as needed;

  • Dismantle and prepare vehicles and equipment for auction;

  • Read and interpret service manuals to include electrical and hydraulic schematics;

  • Respond as needed to all snow duty call outs;

  • Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard practices and procedures in testing and repairing of various types of automotive and other gasoline or diesel operated equipment;

  • Skilled in the use of diagnostic equipment;

  • Skilled in the maintenance and repair of engines, brake systems, manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, clutches, steering assemblies, front and rear axles, fuel injection systems, anti-lock brakes, air brakes, and hydraulic systems;

  • Ability to access component parts on automotive equipment that are difficult to reach;

  • Ability to use a computer;

  • Ability to weld using gas and electric welders;

  • Ability to use cutting torches;

  • Ability to lift/carry up to 75 lbs.; ability to push/pull up to 75 lbs.;

  • Ability to work on call and overtime in winter during and after snow events.

 

*Please note a Class 2 Airport License will need to be obtained within the first week of employment. Selected candidate will need to pass a TSA/FBI background check on the second day of employment.* 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

  • Five (5) or more years of maintenance and repair experience of late model year vehicles/construction equipment, which must have included computerized automotive systems.

  • Possession of tools of the trade at time of hire to include but not limited to wrenches, sockets, air tools and basic hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Service Equipment (ASE) Certification

  • Welding/fabricating, hydraulic and computer diagnostic experience

License Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required at time of application and maintained throughout employment.

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin CDL “Class B” (no air brake restriction) driver’s license is required within six (6) months of hire.
