Assistant Corporation Counsel

Position Type: Full-time, Exempt

Department: Corporation Counsel

Job Summary: Responsibility for all aspects of civil litigation, including representation of Milwaukee County before federal, state and administrative bodies; provide legal assistance and guidance to Milwaukee County departments.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal and state civil procedures; Wisconsin state statutes and case law; trial practices.
  • Ability to make independent legal decisions, conduct legal research; analyze and appraise facts and evidence.

  • Ability to work independently, effectively and harmoniously with others.

  • Requires litigation and trial skill, ability to handle high volume caseload at times; flexibility and initiative.

  • Interpersonal dealings with staff, citizens, county officials/employees and outside business are frequent and must be conducted in a positive manner.

  • Frequent internal and external communication; building strong working relationships internally and externally; high degree of authority in securing understanding and cooperation of multiple departments or interests.

  • Read, write and comprehend routine reports, procedures and/or government regulations; speak effectively before both internal and external groups; prepare and/or present written communications that pertain to complex topics.

  • Regularly makes decisions of responsibility, involving evaluation of information; decisions may require development or application of alternatives or precedents.

  • Typically difficult or complex work; generally governed by broad instructions and objectives usually involving frequently changing conditions and problems.

  • Knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education & Years of Experience Required:  Juris Doctorate (JD) with five (5) or more years of experience in a legal setting with three (3) years of civil litigation. Experience in a municipal or government setting preferred.  Previous experience prosecuting and defending civil litigation and administrative actions, especially in a municipal setting, is preferred.

 

License/Certification:  Admission to the Wisconsin State Bar.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Prosecute and defend civil litigation, including employment, civil rights, forfeitures and return of property matters.  Provide legal guidance to other Milwaukee County departments.  Provide miscellaneous legal assistance as assigned

 Special Instructions: Position is open to qualified internal and external residents of the state of Wisconsin. In accordance with Rule III, Section 12 of the Civil Service Rules, a noncompetitive examination will be held for this position.  The noncompetitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources to rank applicants on the eligible list for this position.  Applicants must possess the minimum qualifications at time of filing application.
