Employee Relations Director

Position Type: Full-time, Salaried

Department: Human Resources

We are seeking an experienced Senior HR Business Partner who is fluent in industry best practices, an innovator and is process driven. The successful candidate is also passionate about building a solid foundation of excellent employee relations policies and practices and nurturing a positive work culture.  This position will serve as a thought leader/coach/mentor within the multiple facets of employee and labor relations, as well as the management of HR Business Partners and support staff. 

Key representative responsibilities would be:  to investigate and respond to the most complex manager and employee concerns, coaching staff to address day-to-day employee relations issues, develop practices that proactively reduce employee relations problems and enhance the overall work environment across Milwaukee County, including the development and coaching of management, EEO/AA programs and required reporting, and labor relations and labor negotiations. The ideal candidate will be committed to creating practices and programs that enhance employee engagement for an organization of over 4,000 employees in a diverse, multi-function work environment.  The Employee Relations Director reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or a related field.  SPHR and/or a Master’s Degree a strong plus.
  • At least 7-10 years of progressive experience as a Generalist or HR Business Partner in all areas of Employee Relations.
  • At least 5 years of successful team management/leadership experience.
  • Must have experience managing labor relations and labor negotiations.
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and Wisconsin employment laws.
  • Experience organizing and building teams, with a strong emphasis on process, standardization and documentation.
  • Effective management and leadership ability; excellent coaching and feedback skills, thought leadership.
  • Knowledge and experience working in both union and non-union environments.
  • Strong investigatory skills; ability to weigh facts and effectively draw conclusions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong listening skills.
  • Prior experience in the public sector is preferred, but not required.
  • Understanding of Servant Leadership in the workplace is preferred.
