Psych Technician (CNAs)

Department:  Behavioral Health Division (Watertown Plank Location)

Compensation Range:  $14.19 - $19.86 per hour

The Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Department currently has openings for part-time and full-time Psychiatric Technicians (Psych Techs) on all shifts. All positions are required to work rotating weekends and are assigned specific holidays to work each year. CNA's with at least one year of experience working in an Acute Care or Psychiatric Hospital setting are encouraged to apply.

Job Summary: Psych Techs play a supportive role in assisting Registered Nurse staff with the care and treatment of acutely ill psyhciatric clients in an inpatient hospital setting. This position is responsible for the transport of patients within Milwaukee County for purposes of medical appointments, clearances, and/or discharges from the hospital.

Job Duties:

  • Performs a variety of hands on care to include assisting patients with ADLs/IADLs, admissions, discharges and physical transfers.

  • Reports patient status, changes in status, activity level, etc. to RN’s and other clinical staff.

  • Documents patient status including but not limited to vital signs, behaviors, appetites, participation in group activities, etc.

  • Under the supervision of the RN, keeps patients engaged in activities while monitoring for potential negative interactions between patients. If a situation arises, intervenes at earliest possible time to avoid an escalation.

  • Initiates and performs group activities with selected population on units.

  • Attends and actively participates in treatment plan meetings.

  • Actively participates in medical and code 1 behavioral emergencies at the direction of the RN or MD; assists with securing and stabilizing patients in a variety of situations including but not limited to elopements and seclusion/restraint episodes.

  • Performs behavioral observation of patients for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, potential for violence, falls, elopement, etc.; will perform 1:1 or 2:1 monitoring as ordered by medical staff.

  • Transport clients to various sites within Milwaukee County (e.g. transport home, to another hospital, etc.)

  • In collaboration with the RN; oversees, delegates, and provides direction to CNAs.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Be a current resident of the State of Wisconsin

  • Hold an active Wisconsin Driver's License which will be maintained throughout employment

  • Be certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Wisconsin at time of application; CNA certification must be active and in good standing without past or pending actions on the Wisconsin's Nurse Aide Registry.

  • Have at least ONE year of experience working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in an Acute Care or Psychiatric Hospital setting

  • At least intermediate experience with personal computers and related software such as Microsoft Word/Excel/Office 365

  • Able to work any shift including nights, weekends, and holiday as required.

  • Willing to undergo and submit to our required pre-employment health and drug testing within 72 hours of notification.

  • Physical demands:  Must be able to perform all maneuvers within the Vistelar training program (Day 1-3) always. In addition, must be able to run 500 feet (1/10 of a mile) within one minute at a steady pace without the need to stop or rest. This may be required of the employee several times within a work day. Able to lift/carry up to 25lbs daily and push/pull up to 250lbs occasionally


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electronic Health Record experience

  • Psychiatric Technician Certification

  • Associate degree or higher in Psych or Human Services; especially for external Milwaukee County Government applicants.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:   English oral and written communication skills; ability to work in stressful situations; ability to make safe and competent judgments; ability to walk to assigned areas of the facility; ability to stand, squat, flex legs, bend at the waist, and walk-up stairs multiple times a day; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with clients’ personnel and professionals.
