Job Summary: To help maintain and monitor the various Life Support Systems for the Zoo’s animal habitats. Exhibits and buildings include: Aquarium and Reptile building, Otter, Penguin, Sea Lion, Polar Bear, and the future Elephant and Hippo exhibits.
Monitors and troubleshoots various life support systems within the Zoo that include: Ozone generators, chlorination systems, diatomaceous earth filtration, sand filters, chemical treatment systems, and aeration systems.
Repairs pumps including mechanical seal replacements and bearing assemblies. Makes repairs to fiberglass, PVC pipes and tubing. Diagnoses problems and make repairs on grinder pumps. Troubleshoots mechanical problems with compressors and makes necessary repairs.
Monitor and Test Water Quality - Has a comprehensive understanding of the methods and standards used to measure water quality including: pH levels, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, ozone levels, MPN coliform levels, water clarity, and the use of flocculent. Maintains accurate records of life support systems.
Assist Zookeepers in water-related procedures – Assists and trains zookeepers with water-related procedures. Periodically helps zookeepers operating backwash life support equipment. Trains and establishes safe working procedures for working with various chemicals and ozone.
Attends meetings and completes all required training.
Safely and properly operates: trucks, vans, golf carts, water testing instruments and basic power/hand tools.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.

Required Education, License/Certification and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required
Technical diploma or formal training in a related field preferred
Valid Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout employment
Intermediate or Advanced level of proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite software programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel required
Two (2) years or more work experience with maintaining aquariums, pumps, water treatment, and general water chemistry required
Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) Life Support Operator Level 1 certification required OR must have the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment
SCUBA certification required OR must have the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment
Advanced knowledge of water chemistry, testing and treatment required
Intermediate knowledge of aquariums and related maintenance required
