Job Summary: To maintain and preserve horticultural and botanical facilities using sound horticultural practices. Preserve and enhance the Zoo’s assets, ensure quality services and product delivery.
Work Schedule: Ability to regularly work early mornings (5am) including weekends regularly, as well as mid-day and evenings as needed.
Maintain Plant Collections - Propagate, cultivate, water, prune, fertilize, mulch, aerate, monitor disease and pests, design, display, and transplant annual, perennial, tree, shrub, and turf species in outdoor, indoor, and greenhouse settings.
Seasonal Events and Themes – Set up and tear down different seasonal themed decorations, carve pumpkins, and help work on creating seasonal decorations.
Assist Grounds Department – Help Grounds department with snow and leaf removal by manually shoveling snow, manually raking leaves, operating snow/leaf blowers, and operating other utility vehicles used for snow/leaf removal.
Assist Grounds Crew - During heavily attended events, the Horticulturist Assistant will help the Grounds department with garbage removal and picking up litter.
Landscaping - Assist in invasive removals, soil and site preparation, design, grading, construction, and installation in renovated and new planting zones.
Attends meetings and completes training as directed by management.
Occasionally work with the Zoo forestry department.
Acts as a Lead Worker –Ability to provide and/or follow oral, written, and visual instructions and feedback. Must be team-oriented.
Properly and safely operate box trucks, pickup trucks, golf carts, utility vehicles, pruners, watering units, tillers, pesticide sprayers, soil aerators, manual and automatic irrigation systems, and other various equipment and tools.
Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
