Highway Maintenance Worker II RA

Position Type: Full- time, hourly

Department:  5700- Highway Maintenance

Compensation Range:  $20.62 - $23.87 hourly 
Closing Date:  This position will remain Open Until Filled.

Job SummaryUnder general direction, to perform light road construction projects and maintenance on Interstate, State, and County Trunk Highways as directed by WISDOT and Milwaukee County DOT including bituminous pavement and concrete pavement repair, safety appurtenance repair, mowing, snow and ice control, and vehicle equipment maintenance.  This job exists to ensure the residents of Milwaukee County have safe and well maintained roadways.



  1. Equipment Operation/Maintenance. Operate various forms of construction equipment including, but not limited to, dual axel and tandem axel dump trucks, milling machines, front end loaders, Vacall, roller compactor, anti-icing units, sewer jetter, tar kettles and bucket trucks. Check lights, fluids and overall vehicle conditions; wash vehicles; maintain  Flail Mowers, Vacalls, tar kettles, arrow boards, and road work signs; maintain had tools.

  2. Safety Repair Work. Bituminous pavement and concrete repair; bridge maintenance. Mil and jack hammer for asphalt removal, preparation and replacement; perform concrete slab removal, preparation and replacement; repair potholes; repair and maintain shoulders; repair Guardrail Barrier Wall, TAU Systems, Quadguard systems, SMART cushion, Attenuator barrels, and fencing. Arrow boards follow trucks for County electricians, road sweepers, patch crews and weed sprayers.

  3. Grounds Maintenance. Cut grass on Interstate, State, and County Trunk Highways and Right of Ways; trim and mow medians and pick up litter; remove tree and brush; control unwanted vegetation; maintain mowers, gas trimmers, chainsaws and chippers.

  4. Traffic Control.  To sign and cone for lane and road closures on Interstate, State and County Trunk Highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); provide traffic control for festival and special events.

  5. Winter Work. Apply chemicals, anti-icing, and salt as well as snow plowing using dual axel or tandem axed dump trucks, front end loaders, and rubber tire skid steers; patrol winter roads; install snow fencing.

  6. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent is required.

  • Possession of a Wisconsin State class B driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement at time of application and maintained during incumbency is required

  • Up to one (1) year of construction experience is required.

  • Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 60lbs on a daily basis.

  • Available to work any shift (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) as well as weekends, holidays and overtime.

  • Experience driving CDL rated vehicles or equipment is highly preferred.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of a wide variety of maintenance techniques and equipment including shovels, rakes, hammers, drills, street brooms, picks, chop saw and torches; Knowledge of the techniques, methods, materials and equipment used in maintenance and improvement of highways and roads; knowledge of public safety rules and regulations; knowledge and familiarity with the maintenance and lubrication and minor repair of a wide variety of vehicles, machinery and equipment; ability to operate a wide variety of vehicles and other equipment used in snow removal and in the improvement and maintenance of grounds and roads; ability to use hand tools of the trade; ability to follow both oral and written instructions; ability to work in adverse weather conditions; and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with staff, the public and others.  


Special Instructions: This Original Examination is open to current residents of the state of Wisconsin.  In accordance with Rule III Section 12 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position.  The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources to rank applicants on the eligible list for this position.
