Mechanic - Fleet

Position Type:  Full-time, hourly 

Department:  5300-Fleet Management Building 

Compensation Range:  $22.78 - $26.25 Hourly
Closing Date: Open until filled 

Job Summary:  Technician that repairs vehicles and equipment, responsible for the repair, set up, dismantling, and upkeep of all county owned vehicles and equipment.  To repair and maintain all Milwaukee County’s equipment and vehicles.

Job duties:

  • Diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment.

  • Use shop equipment such as floor hoists, diagnostic equipment, etc.

  • Order repair parts as needed to fix the vehicles or piece of equipment.

  • Complete all paperwork as needed.

  • Dismantle and prepare vehicles and equipment for auction.

  • Read and interpret service repair manuals and electrical and hydraulics schematics.

  • Respond as needed to all snow duty call outs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with five (5) or more years of experience in Late model light and/or heavy vehicles/equipment diagnosis.  Able to troubleshoot and repair problems with little to no supervision is required.  Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets is required.  The ability to lift/carry up to 75lbs and push/pull up to 25lbs on a regular basis is required. 

License/Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license required at time of application and maintained during incumbency.

  • State of Wisconsin Class D (CDL) required within six (6) months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Exchange of basic information with internal and/or external contacts.  Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos.  Makes minimal decision-making responsibility.  Understand and follow instructions.  Execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.

 

Special Instructions: This Original Examination is open to current residents of the state of Wisconsin.  In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position.  The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
