Deputy Director - Parks

Position Type: Full-time, Salary

Department: Parks

Compensation Range: $82,139.62 - $121,701.01
Closing Date: October 22, 2018 @ 5:59pm CST

Job Summary: Assist the Executive Director in accomplishing the mission of Milwaukee County Parks. Provide management, oversight and guidance to full time workforce of over 200 employees. In the absence of the Executive Director, act on the Executive Director's behalf.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support Parks Divisions: Provide direction of Parks day-to-day efforts spanning Administration & Planning, Operations & Trades, and Business Services & Recreation. Assure a strong leadership presence for staff, and ensure that department efforts operate consistently and ethically within the mission and values of Parks, as well as Milwaukee County.

  • Cultivate Parks Mission, Vision and Values: Support leadership and staff in stewarding a thriving park system that heightens the quality of life in the county and leads as model agency. Provide innovative approaches for improving and expanding community and employee engagement.

  • Strategic Oversight and Performance Management: Lead the development of Parks Performance Management and strategic efforts, monitoring results and tracking key performance indicators. Perform and manage high level analysis of complex issues impacting Milwaukee County Parks including: long-range fiscal plan development & management, system master planning, project management, public engagement, and continuous improvement.

  • Capital Planning & Deferred Maintenance: Direct the annual capital planning process considering system needs, available resources, staffing capacity, and long-range impact. Identify capital and deferred maintenance needs and priorities; guide project management staff; maintain short-, med-, and long-range capital plans.

  • Interdepartmental Coordination: Liaison to the Board of Supervisors, Human Resources, IMSD, and other county partners as needed. Support board cycles, audits, IT Development, staff development, and succession planning.

  • Outreach and Collaboration: Work with internal and external partners, elected officials, and community agencies to enhance relationships and brand image of Milwaukee County Parks throughout the region.

  • Special Assignments and Projects: Participate on special project teams.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 20 lbs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required License/Certification, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Public Administration, Parks & Recreation or closely related field required

  • Master’s degree or higher preferred

  • Two (2) years or more experience in Leadership, Change Management, Parks & Recreation, Administration, Finance, Continuous Improvement or closely related experience required

  • One (1) year or more experience in Supervisory, Management or Director role required

  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) preferred
