Position Type:  Full-Time, Hourly

Department:  5700-Facilities Management

Compensation Range:  $29.51 Per Hour 
Closing Date: Open until filled 

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Mechanical Service Manager, the Painter will complete painting, wall papering and staining work for various commercial repairs and remodeling projects.  


Job Duties:

  1. Coat Surfaces. Apply paint, stains and other surface finishes to floors, walls, doors and cabinets. Estimate material quantities and costs. Match colors and textures.
  2. Surface Preparation. Clean and prepare surfaces for proper adherence.
  3. Area Protection. Protect adjacent areas from over-spray. Plan out work boundaries and install masking as necessary.
  4. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Drivers’ license is required at time of application and maintained during incumbency.
  • Completion of a Painter and Decorator apprenticeship which is certified by the Wisconsin Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations or Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, U.S. Dept. of Labor.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in Commercial painting, staining and wall covering.
  • Basic Knowledge of computer and software applications such as:  Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 75lbs on a frequent basis.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  Exchange of basic information with internal and/or external contacts.  Explain and gather information, answer queries, or ask assistance with internal and/or external contacts.  Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos.  Speak effectively before both internal and/or external groups.  Makes decisions of responsibility involving evaluation of information; decisions may require development or application of alternatives or precedents.  Understand and follow instructions.  Execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.  


Special Instructions: This Original Examination is open to Wisconsin residents.  In accordance with Rule III Section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position.  The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
