Paramedic Trainer and Paramedic - Hourly

Job Summary:

This position split between both of these titles and duties.

 

Under the direction and supervision of the Medical Director of the Milwaukee County EMS (Paramedic) System or designee, the Paramedic Hourly will provide advanced life support services to the public at approved events.

 

Under the supervision of the Educational Coordinator, the Paramedic Trainer will assist in the initial and State-mandated continuing education of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedics.

 

Paramedic Hourly Job Duties

  1. To respond to the site of the medical emergency when dispatched
  2. To perform appropriate patient assessment as detailed in the Standards of Care Manual of the Milwaukee County EMS (Paramedic) System
  3. To provide appropriate emergency medical care
  4. To document patient care events
  5. To prepare equipment and supplies for use on the next response
  6. To perform other duties as assigned
  7. Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds up and/or down two (2) flights of stairs.

Paramedic Trainer Job Duties:

  1. To supervise trainees enrolled in the Milwaukee County Paramedic Training Center in clinical experience areas
  2. To evaluate the progress of students assigned to his/her supervision
  3. To assist in the evaluation process of trainees enrolled in the Milwaukee County Paramedic Training Center
  4. To perform other duties as assigned

This Original Examination is open to qualified internal and external candidates of the State of Wisconsin.  The selection process will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Current Wisconsin driver’s license which can be maintained throughout employment
  • One (1) year in pre-hospital or emergency medical care or its equivalent is required
  • Teaching experience in medically related education desirable.
  • For Paramedic Hourly:  Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds up and/or down two (2) flights of stairs.


License and Certification Requirement: 

  • Successful completion of a State Certified Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Program or its equivalent required (determined by the Department of Health and Family Services, Emergency Medical Services Section of the State of Wisconsin)
  • State of Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic License is required. 
  • Possession of BLS and ACLS certifications are required. 
  • For Paramedic Trainer:  BLS and/or ACLS Instructor Certification preferred.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the culture of the fire department; knowledge of the principles, theories and techniques of emergency medical services; skill in providing emergency care; oral and written communication skills; skill in performing duties in stressful situations; ability to maintain professional demeanor in emergency situations; ability to carry essential ambulance equipment; ability to enter and exit the ambulance, public or private residence and any scene of a medical emergency; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with students, staff, patients and others.
